Our ten days had passed in the blink of an eye. We each gave a short, impromptu presentation about what we had learned from the trip and what we hoped to bring back home. The Indians surprised us with some amazing presentations, singing and performing in Hindi. After dinner, the celebration turned into a dance party when the Indians shared some popular Hindi music. By the end of the night, none of us could believe we were getting on planes the next day to take off for different parts of the world.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v10.nonxt3.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D74579bbc12d15011%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1332657296%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6EC54B8F04F9D03FE13630EC7CB0AD48A4C327D4.4582B46CF951A13D1A7E08C3160BD49E809682E1%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D74579bbc12d15011%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DfndiXEf0bWAA1JCApiZKEp2hvkU&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Once back at the hotel all of the Global Citizens gathered for an after-party celebration. type='html'>On our last day in China we finally visited the Great Wall of China, something I'd been looking foward to the whole trip. I have to say, the Wall definately lived up to the "great" in it's name. Although much of it was built over 500 years ago during the Ming Dynasty, it still remains the longest man made structure in the world. Visible from space, it is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 224px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE8Aq3myD-I/AAAAAAAAAJo/cXoIbNhpd_0/s400/IMG_2639.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498614406523785186" />

I was surprised to find that climbing the wall felt like as great a feat as building it. For over a half an hour we staggared up hundreds of stone steps that wound their way through the humid jungle. When we stopped to rest, feeling like our limbs were on fire, we were swarmed by huge bugs surfacing from the tangled undergrowth. The agonizing journey to the wall only made it more amazing when I stepped foot on its breezy summit.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE7_XM4RmdI/AAAAAAAAAJg/o7sEMc4Pkwk/s320/gwall5.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498612969125288402" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE7_Wxq31aI/AAAAAAAAAJY/4jszJU7N64Q/s320/gwall+photographer.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498612961821316514" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE7_WoFlw5I/AAAAAAAAAJQ/inRNj7Wwmyw/s320/gwall4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498612959249023890" />

The Wall was spectacular. Only about ten feet wide and punctuated by watch towers every so often, it snaked and dipped across the mountians, dissapearing into the mist. As we climbed over the weather-worn stone I marvalled at how, even after hundreds of years, something built by hand could have lasted so well. Though we profess we've come so far as a society and have built such amazing things beyond the wildest dreams of ancient architects, they have not been built to last. In a hundred years our skyscrapers will probably be crumbling, but the Great Wall will still stand.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE8A2xPCIpI/AAAAAAAAAJ4/I4PPWwp0TbE/s400/gwall+1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498614610971992722" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE8BE5LjAqI/AAAAAAAAAKA/rqcV_PQswnc/s320/aj+and+jason.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498614853623022242" />

A top the great wall, backdropped against a seemingly endless expanse of jungle, the film crew recorded the last of its promotional ads. It was amazing to think that another student would soon be watching me standing in such an incredible place, proclaiming "this is my classroom," and would be inspired to travel with EF. On tour I really learned the importance of travel, of how it can truly open a person's world view and provides learning through experience that is unequivocal in textbooks. All students should have the opportunity to travel; I know I never would have been able to visit a place like China without aid from a scholarship.

June 25th

That afternoon we were able to test our bartering skills at Chi'enmen Market, a market place near Tienanmen Square. We separated off into groups to explore, trying our hands at a little bit of independence and strengthening the friendships we'd been building. Unfortunately for me, it was then that I discovered my wallet was missing. I spent the afternoon frantic until we returned to the hotel and cancelled my Visa card (waking up my poor mother at two in the morning!) Needless to say, I learned a hard lesson about watching out for one's belongings.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TE71C7teTwI/AAAAAAAAAJI/0tPp4Bte0K0/s400/market.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498601625802919682" />

We relaxed together at the hotel for a little while, playing some team-building games and then simply spending time with each other, whether it was obsessing over our new favorite hackey sacks, ordering mass amounts of food from the French waiter at the cafe, or just sitting and talking. I was realizing just how close I was becoming with my fellow Global Citizens--and how sad I would be when we all went our separate ways in two days time. The ten days had truly flown by.

After dinner we stepped out into Beijing for a spectacular kung fu show. As we walked up to the Temple, we caught a glimpse of Beijing's people visiting a place beautiful to both them and outsiders. They practiced tai chi. They strolled hand in hand. They danced to the sounds of traditional music vibrating from speakers. They played dominoes. They kicked feathered hacky sacks. It was amazing to see such vibrant and colorful life surrounding me.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDU0s1QRdsI/AAAAAAAAAIw/QrGOG5uS3kM/s400/temp+of+heaven.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491353265462408898" />
The Temple it's self was beautiful. Three tiers of elaborately painted blue, red, and gold, the Temple was surviving from the fifteenth century, a place where farmers would come to pray for a good harvest.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDU4BIMJjDI/AAAAAAAAAI4/Y9IidMep3hQ/s400/temp+of+heaven+3.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491356912677653554" />

In the park, we were given a tai chi lesson. Tai chi was different than I thought it would be--often it's confused with Kung Fu. However, although tai chi was about self defense, it stressed slower, fluid motions and control over one's body. At first glimpse it seemed easy, but I discovered that truly mastering the intricacies of the poses would take years. Our tour guide, Jacky (not Chan) was a tai chi master in several of the different styles.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDU5ok8XDGI/AAAAAAAAAJA/YYuqGiJHsxk/s400/tai+chi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491358689922583650" />

Our tai chi lesson in the middle of the bustling park contributed to what seemed to me to be a separation between modern China and traditional China. It felt as though the country was caught between progressing forward through new technologies and celebrating its past. Cities like Shanghai were focused on building the tallest and brightest skyscrapers, the most fantastic World's Fair, the most affluent citizens. I wondered if China's push to be a modern world power was at the expense of its traditions.

The Summer Palace

After exploring the forbidden city, our next stop was the ancient Summer Palace, a gorgeous place with some amazing history behind it. The Summer Palace was the second home of the Emperor Dowager Cixi, also known as the Dragon Lady, one of the most powerful women in Chinese history and my new heroine.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDUvG309fCI/AAAAAAAAAII/6qSP7LHV7u0/s400/sp4.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491347115759991842" />
Cixi was originally a concubine to Emperor Xianfeng in the late 1850s. We actually visited her quarters while in the forbidden city. Cixi bore the emperor a son and when Xianfeng died unexpectedly, her son was crowned Emperor at age six. Cixi essentially ruled behind the curtain, gathering political allies as her son grew up. As he got older, he attempted to drive Cixi from the Forbidden City, and eventually died of smallpox. Meanwhile, the Dragonlady hand-picked one of Xianfeng's nephews as Emperor but continued to rule through him, governing the Hundred Days' Reform, The Boxer Rebellions, and the Qing Reforms among other politics. The new Emperor died two days before Cixi, giving her enough time to pick successor who would continue her policies, leading to speculation that she poisoned. Regardless of whether or not this is true, Emperor Dowager Cixi definately had a major influence on China.

The lake its self was actually man-made, built by the Emperess in an attempt to immitate the breathtaking West Lake in Hangzhou, which we also visited. It didn't quite compare, but it sure came pretty close. The dirt excavated to create the lake was used to build a man-made mountian, acutely named Longevity Hill, atop which the palace rests. It was gorgeous, and we had free time to simpy sit by the water and enjoy the view and the breeze.

<a meant a lot of walking in the very hot Beijing weather. Our first stop was Tienanmen Square, the largest city square in the world. It was absolutely enormous, flagged by huge buildings, statues, and fountains. The square was first built by the Ming dynasty in 1651. As a communal area large enough for Beijing's population, the square has hosted a number of famous historical events.

It was the sight of the May 4th Movement, an anti-imperialist protest marking an upsurge of Chinese nationalism, and also where Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed China to be the "People's Republic," a communist state. We were able to walk past Mao's mausoleum, where his body is crystallized and on display. Unfortunately, we weren't able to actually go inside because of the huge line of Chinese pilgrims waiting to see his body. Tienanmen Square was also the site of the infamous Tienanmen Square Massacre, where pro-democracy supporters, mostly students and intellectuals, protested communism's social and economic controls, resulting in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people when the government tried to put down the riot.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNZDLkVBWI/AAAAAAAAAGo/lWL6hh4LeIU/s320/IMG_2478.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490830281874408802" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNZCf90D7I/AAAAAAAAAGg/WY0WqOOCEeE/s320/IMG_2470.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490830270170140594" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNZCDIpPBI/AAAAAAAAAGY/GFuG27TvbLw/s320/IMG_2462.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490830262430940178" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNZB-Ab2dI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/vqVbzUo5VZo/s320/IMG_2461.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490830261054331346" />

Tienanmen Square was also the gate-way into the Forbidden City, the private residence of the Emperor. The "Forbidden" in the name comes from the law that no commoners were allowed inside the palace; in fact, nobody was allowed inside without expressed permission from the Emperor. The other half of the name, "City," was fitting enough as well. The palace was enormous--consisting of huge pavilion after pavilion, with hundreds of buildings, a city indeed. It was hard to imagine one family living there.

The city was made up of the Outer Court, where the Emperor conducting business and day-to-day affairs, and the Inner Court, where he and his family resided. We weren't able to walk through the entire city, simply because it was so large. The whole place had an air of ancient China, reminding me irrevocably of Mulan.

<img style="float:left; The flight its self was short--only an hour--but led way to a small crisis. I left my laptop on the plane. I know, I know, that was really stupid, but in my defense, I'm an absent-minded person, and they tell us to stow our possessions underneath the seats during takeoff! Fortunately,

We were able to relax after arriving in Beijing and explore the little street by our hotel, finding a cheap mini-mart with some... questionable items. And a really cute dog.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TC6kgnxdIDI/AAAAAAAAAEY/stMqhx3CRKw/s320/IMG_2400.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489505876150394930" />

That evening, we went for a rickshaw ride down the streets of Old Beijing. The rickshaw was pulled by a man on a bicycle and we were able to slip into ancient cobbled lanes, places too narrow for cars to fit. As Max and I rode together in our rickshaw, we noted how different Beijing was from Shanghai. Shanghai was a modern city, built up less than 200 years ago, full of skyscrapers and lights and apartment buildings. Beijing felt much older, ancient, with a history written into its flat-roofed, tiled houses and oriental street corners.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TC6mvdJ5pBI/AAAAAAAAAE4/ZDcV5MHwu8U/s320/IMG_2448.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489508330021430290" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TC6mvIHTbpI/AAAAAAAAAEw/6P_w0R3XSTo/s320/IMG_2447.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489508324373393042" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TC6mu4bimNI/AAAAAAAAAEo/t0D0XfNUGAk/s320/IMG_2424.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489508320163305682" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TC6muuGFsSI/AAAAAAAAAEg/xc65r9Hact8/s320/IMG_2416.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5489508317388976418" />

The rickshaw delivered us at an ancient, family-owned home in the Hutong. The family ushered us in and showed us around the house. In traditional Chinese style, the building was built with four sides facing the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west), all surrounding a central courtyard. Within the courtyard was a well for pumping water. It was extremely interesting to explore the house, to look into actual bedrooms that had existed for hundreds of years, where people still resided today. The house would have situated an extended family, with all the girls sleeping on one side and the boys on another. I was startled to find out that there was no bathroom in the whole house- family members would have to walk down the street to the public out-house to bathe and use the toilet! For someone used to a bathroom just down the hallway, this was hard to believe.

As we walked around the small courtyard, the men of the house watched us, smoking cigarettes. I wondered what it was like for the family, to have intruders in their personal home walking around and snapping pictures, marveling at something that had been ordinary all their lives. If the family had chosen to, they could have sold the house for a small fortune to some sort of historical commission. However, the family refused to give up their ancestral home and its strong ties with the deceased, instead choosing to live poorly but traditionally.

<a onblur="try As a tea obsessive, someone who always likes a nice cup of tea at night, I loved this. Hangzhou is famous for its "Dragon Well" tea, which is the national tea of China. Long Jing tea is made from young leaves on tea plants, giving it a richer flavor that is preserved, along with its natural antioxidants, when the tea is pan-dried immediately after picking. At the plantation, we saw huge slopes of tea bushes climbing up into the mountain on terraces, green hills disappearing into the mist.
We had a tea-tasting session instructed by a man called "Dr. Tea," who taught us all the secrets of green tea as well as its importance to the Chinese. As he spoke, we learned the proper way to receive and drink tea according to ancient Chinese customs. The tea we were drinking was in the form of "loose tea," or tea without a tea-bag. We learned to snub our noses at tea bags, for they destroy all of the natural vitamins and antioxidants within tea. The Chinese do not "drink" a cup of tea, rather, they "eat" a cup of tea, for all of the loose tea leaves are left to swirl about in the cup and can be eaten.

The loose tea was delicious--rich in flavor and especially good for the health, from what I was told. I had never drank tea that way before, but I couldn't wait to bring the custom home to my family, and so I purchased a couple of cans of the Dragon Well tea.

<object The activity was extremely fun and allowed us to test our real world survival skills/limited knowledge of Chinese by interacting with strangers. We each got to stretch our teamwork skills, leadership skills, and street smarts as we raced against the clock to find all the items on our list.

My group was composed of myself, Max, Tarun, and Devika, and here's what we had to find.
Find:
-a restaurant menu (this proved to be the most difficult for our team; for some reason every restaurant we went into had no take-out menu, no matter how many times we mimed and pointed)
-a pair of chopsticks
-something written in English
-a city map
-a Chinese newspaper
-a local bus schedule (involved me going up to a disgrunted bus-driver and asking about a "che zhan." He had no idea what I was saying.)
-a business card
-some foreign currency (not Indian, American, or Chinese
-Chinese candy (we ended up spending 20 yuan on something the judges claimed was "Japanese" candy)
-Chinese loose tea (Devika showed us all the ropes by asking to "smell" a pinch of the tea in a tea store and then simply leaving with it)

Take Photos of the Following:
-A team member in a rickshaw (we stumbled upon this in a moment of chance and it proved our crown jewel with the judges)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TCuLJgY4aRI/AAAAAAAAACg/uQztgIc0d5A/s320/IMG_2292.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488633566310459666" />
-the Chinese characters for bathroom
-a team member with a taxi driver
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TCuLZPZLqWI/AAAAAAAAACo/8ifvUbyYwvw/s320/IMG_2288.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488633836626225506" />
-Someone doing tai chi
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TCuL7pHbyfI/AAAAAAAAACw/qTZn-BYqNEM/s320/IMG_2301.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488634427646659058" />
Okay, so maybe he wasn't doing tai chi so much as we found a random stranger on the street to teach tai chi to, but it still counts. On that day we all took a one-and-a-half hour drive to the city of Hangzhou, a city regarded as one of the greenest and most beautiful places in China, nestled on the banks of the gorgeous West Lake.

Our first stop in Hangzhou was at an ancient pagoda, where our tour guide explained to us the legend behind it. The story told that there was once a scholar in Hangzhou who fell in love with a beautiful woman who was actually a white snake. For their love, the gods cast the White Snake Lady into a well buried deep beneath the pagoda.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TCuHbIN5i4I/AAAAAAAAACY/5GHY602ztVA/s320/IMG_2257.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488629471013079938" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TCuHa67apRI/AAAAAAAAACQ/ILvTfxGh6Mw/s320/IMG_2256.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488629467445896466" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TCuHabk0ijI/AAAAAAAAACI/CvbOv_NGmy8/s320/IMG_2232.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5488629459029625394" />

Acrobatics Show

After the Expo we had a delicious Indian dinner where Divyanish taught me the Indian custom of eating with one's hands...by stealing my fork.

We headed to an acrobatics show at the Shanghai Ritz Carlton, and it was absolutely stunning. Some of the stunts were so unbelievable that you had to wonder who was crazy enough to scheme that they were even possible, much less perform them. It was something I had been truly excited to see because I had heard so much about it. Needless to say, it didn't dissapoint, and I don't really think I understood the true scope of the place until I was inside. The Expo was enormous— each country had huge buildings, beautifully decorated, woven between streets with vendors and restaurants. All of it was so clean and modern and permanent-looking that I had to remind myself that the Expo was only open from spring until fall.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNqKXRKOnI/AAAAAAAAAHg/1C-KDU8Ck9Q/s320/IMG_2196.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490849096971991666" />
Many of the larger pavilions had huge lines with 2-3 hour waits, and so we only visited the insides of a few of the African countries. However, just walking around and viewing everything from the outside was enough, for the buildings came in every size and form. One was huge and spherical, made entirely of glass; one was decorated with hundreds of snowflakes; one was jungle camouflaged with branch-like rods acting as supports; one had a spiraled, rooftop-road down which bicycles pedaled; one was composed completely out of tiny, fluttering mirrors like a great glittering crystal. The China pavilion was incredible—it overshadowed everything around it; several stories high it blossomed into the air like a bright-red upsides-down pyramid.

The funniest thing at the Expo was that for once, people saw us as the minorities, the strange foreigners. Strangers kept running up to us to take pictures, especially to Max and Tara, the two blondes. They were a new species all together. I was a wild time to run around a place that looked like Epcot x 1,000, taking pictures and seeing all kinds of exotic people and things. I was absolutely awestruck.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v19.nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D93434df3c4cdfc74%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1332657296%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D310B72DE5873DA2F796A853BD205CD6AADBE6693.56DD6C559C87CD25FE354D9939D5C64948EA0FB2%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D93434df3c4cdfc74%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DhYe_EkRT8rIw_M8nH10YzU1kD6I&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

School Visit

<img style="float:left; We were told at the gate that we were supposed to have some sort of “cultural presentation,” which we were previously unaware of, and so we split into our two groups, Indian and American. Us Americans couldn’t really think of anything impromptu that we all knew how to do, and so we settled for teaching the students how to dance the hokey pokey.

It was truly amazing to try and speak to the young students with our bits of broken Chinese. They performed Chinese songs, dance routines, and short skits for us. The school wasn’t crumbling, but neither was it very modern or well equipped with supplies. The classrooms were very stark and bare, with only chalkboards and desks and no air conditioning. However, the students, children of migrant workers, laughed at our silly dance, fed us ripened watermelon rinds, and jumped to take pictures with us. The whole experience felt like the reason we had truly come to China—to share our own education system and discover both differences and similarities in theirs.

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v22.nonxt6.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D46345ab6ae945b6b%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1332657296%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D6E83AC3A7C89A2C4AA719B801DE5C5F4A63C218E.5D91B1F2FA34323879ED092B491EBD3490492F5%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D46345ab6ae945b6b%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DMUlyIqFXeykT382n7Q18RFOEwyY&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

More Internet Trouble

Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with this site during the remainder of my trip thanks to a really bad proxy. =( My flight got in at 3 am today and I'm finally home! We woke up early in the morning and visited the Jade Buddha Temple, housing the largest statue made out of a single piece of jade. The temple felt, looked, and smelled exactly the way China should have been like in my mind—huge oriental arches, smoky-sweet incense, enormous gold statues adorning decorated rooms where monks bowed reverently. Everywhere, Chinese people were knelt in prayer or offering burning torches of incense. Despite the large number of tourists, the temple felt very serene. Max found a penny on the ground which he was able to balance on a wishing well, bringing him the custom of good luck.

Next we visited a silk-making factory, where we toured to see how silk was spun into clothing and sheets from the worms in cocoons. It was incredible to see that one silk worm could provide 1,000 meters of silk!

After the silk factory we took a tour of a beautiful garden tucked away a street market. It started to rain, and the over-congested market felt stifling and dirty. There is a quality to the air, a sort of smog that never goes away, as if the smoke from millions of cigarettes is drifting up into the air and blanketing the city.

Brooke, Jason, and I went off on our own for lunch and discovered how hard it is to order off even a McDonald’s menu when everything is in Chinese. As we sat on a stoop to eat our lunch, we noticed that every single person who passed by stopped to stare at us. It was kind of like being celebrities.

The day became increasingly more amazing when we visited an EF language school in Shanghai. During the presentations made by the Indian group and the Chinese students, I discovered just how different American education is from Indian and Chinese education. I got to meet my penpal, Amy, and talk to her a bit about her school. Her English wasn’t very good, and she was a bit shy, but I was able to deliver my letter/picture to her.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNrMTyXt8I/AAAAAAAAAIA/wrRz6brcs9A/s400/IMG_1964.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490850229908912066" />

We picked up a quick dinner at a Chinese restaurant, and then headed out to take a boat-tour of Shanghai at night. Shanghai completely transformed when the sun went down, and from the windy deck of the boat we could see all the amazing buildings illuminated. It was absolutely incredible, and I got a lot of amazing pictures.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNq7NGzVpI/AAAAAAAAAH4/AhQ1MKi2yro/s320/IMG_2077.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490849936057783954" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 179px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNq65e160I/AAAAAAAAAHw/gDo5BTAmGt8/s320/IMG_2099.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490849930789907266" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 179px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_h10h_BZQMe8/TDNq6QQ1yiI/AAAAAAAAAHo/A9eYQfrl0tc/s320/IMG_2107.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5490849919725324834" />

June 19th: China at Last

The first thing I noticed in sepping off te plane as that the air tasted different- a sort of smokey, humid tang like cities and rivers intertwined. We took a bus to the hotel that aternoon where I dozed in a sort of stupor after getting no sleep at all on the plane. It was there that we met the Indian group and headed out to dinner.

Over some traditional Chinese cuisine, I talked with some of the Indian students about their day-to-day life and how things were sort of different between our two countries. I disovered that while in America we take different courses every year--for example, Geometry, Algebra I, Precalculus--in India, students have a "math" class, which cumulatively builds on their knowledge of all aspects of the subject. Also, squash and cricket, two sports practically nonexistant in the states, are very popular in Inda.

I managed to barter for the first time in Chinese with a street vendor out side, using my new favorite phrase, "Ni shir baba Chunglung-ma?" or, "is Jackie Chan your father?" Needless to say, he was very confused.

As we drove home on the bus, I saw Shanghai transformed. After the sun set, the buildings lit up like Times Square times ten, sparkling with rainbow light and waterfall of color and flashing ads. It was amazing to see, and I'm anticpating the boat-tour we take at night to better see the lights.

I tumbled into bed that night and was asleep within minutes, completely exhausted.
<img width='1' height='1' Phew- what a feat. By the end of it, I wasn't sure if an outside world really existed beyond freeze-dried food and fasten-seat-belt signs. I got here to the hotel, plugged in my computer, and discovered that Chinese government blocks any social networking sight including Facebook, Youtube, and... wait for it... blogspot.

Fortunately, a Chinese boy at a school we visited gave me a clever way to get around this, so I'm back and posting. It was an interesting day, and I got to get to know all of my fellow scholars a little bit.

Here's the line-up:
-Frozan, from Massacusetts (just outside of Boston), a really sweet girl who actually moved her from Afghanistan only six years ago
-Brooke, from Virginia, with her slight southern twang and perky personality
-Max, also from Mass, but a very small town. It was both funny and endearing to watch him gape over Chicago's skyscrapers and highrises.
-Erika, from southern Texas, almost Mexico, a bit of an insomniac from what I've heard
-Roshika, from Califonia, our one die-hard Lakers fan watching in sorrow as they lose (hah!)
-Rochelle, from Florida, a self-proclaimed nerd and sweetheart
-Jason, from Hawaii, our six-foot-five giant with a cool sense of humor and an unfortunate knack for getting things spilled on him
-Jennifer, from North Carolina, with her neon green clothes and sunny attitude
-and finally, Melissa from Maryland, who I won't meet until tomorrow when she flies in to Chicago

We're boarding an early flight tomorrow, fifteen hours all the way into Shanghai. Humidity + my hair = disaster, but thankfully it's not going to be too rainy, just some scattered thunderstorms once in a while. Check it out here.

As for Beijing, it looks like it's going to be much dryer (which means less humidity- yay!) but also much hotter. As in, low nineties. However, sunny every day, so that's plus. I've been working on final preparations and packing these past couple of days: I've gone to the bank to order some Chinese currency, gotten a visa card, and done some seriously hard-core shopping for summer clothes (i.e. bought a million and one sun dresses). I don't know how I'm going to fit it all into my suitcase. The little blue EF tours backpack is perfectly sized for carry-ons, though.

I've also been talking a lot with the students I'm going to be traveling with via facebook. It's been great to get to know the American kids, and even more intersing to talk to the Indian students. Who knew cricket was so popular? We're friends already, so I can't imagine how close we'll be by the time we depart for home. Also, the fifteen hour flight is sure to help- people bond through trauma.

Some other news: I've been selected to be filmed in a documentary EF is making of our tour to China! Myself and one of the boys, Jason from Hawaii, will be representing America, along with two of the Indian students. I won't lie, I'm very excited- I've never been followed around by a camera crew before!

33 Days and Counting

So things are really getting busy now, with about a month to go until I leave. (Departure date has been set: June 17th, and I'll be flying in to Chicago and then OVER THE TOP OF THE WORLD. Very cool.) I've recieved my passport, my visa, and my vaccinations (ouch).

Also, tonight I had my second conference call with the rest of our group, where we talked about some of the details of our trip. Fun fact- I'll be getting a penpal from Shanghai, to get to know someone I'll be personally meeting on the trip! What's interesting about our trip is that apart from the standard sightseeing, we'll also be visiting a couple of schools and getting to observe the differences in the way Chinese, Indian, and American students study. I'm really looking foward to that.

On a different note, I'd like to share the film that my essay prompt was based on. It's called Two Million Minutes and it's a documentary that captures the essence of education and youth in America, China, and india. It's a great movie, you should all check it out!

Anyway, I'll be updating more frequently as our departure date approaches. Stay tuned!

-Jackie

Dan Yorke Show

A copy of my interview can be found here. As my first entry, I thought I might explain a bit about who I am and what this blog has been created for. For starters, my name is Jackie Roberti, and I’m a perfectly ordinary high school junior (though I like to think otherwise) living smack in the middle of the tiny state of Rhode Island. Recently, I was awarded with EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship as one of ten students nationwide chosen to represent the United States in China this summer. This blog is going to document my experiences, for anyone who is interested in hearing about my trip. I’ve never really blogged before, but I’m reminding myself a bit of the movie Julie and Julia, what with the whole new-to-the-web, begging-for-followers thing.

A couple of weeks ago I entered a 1,500-word essay (a copy of which can be found here) into EF’s Global Citizen Scholarship contest. Needless to say, I was floored to find out that I was chosen nationally as a winner. After being notified by Elizabeth Lelaurin, an EF representative (and who I found out to be my tour leader), my sister and I danced around the kitchen for a good twenty minutes. We could not believe that I—the farthest having ever travelled a mere ten minutes over the Canadian border—was actually going to China, a place half-way around the world, all expenses paid. It felt like a dream come true.

The very next day I submitted my passport forms and stopped in to Barnes and Noble to pick up a copy of Chinese for Dummies. Right now my Mandarin consists of about six words. I’ve decided that I’ll limit myself to the essentials— How much does this cost? Where is the bathroom? I’m lost. Like I said, everything I’ll need to know. I’ve already had a conference call to get introduced to the other winners, hailing from places as far as Texas, California, and Hawaii. Along with the group from India, this will be the experience of a lifetime to make new friends, build cross-cultural connections, and see the world at a global level.
